Christmas in the Test Valley

Come at 10-30am or at noon for an early lunch. We visit Lord Mountbatten's Romsey, the wonderful winter landscapes of the Test Valley and Winchester where the German style Christmas Market nestles against the walls for the ancient cathedral.

Come and meet the Guide in Romsey either at 10-30am or on a later start you could arrive for an early lunch at midday and still enjoy the complete itinerary and be heading home by 5-00pm.

If you come for 10-30am we start the day with morning coffee and biscuits included in your tour fee. Romsey sits at the south end of the Test Valley, a genteel Market town with a Waitrose. We'll take you on a short-but-sweet town trail to the Norman Abbey and if it all seems a bit familiar it's probably because you recognise it as Kingsmarkham from Ruth Rendell's Wexford. Lord Mountbatten is buried in the Abbey which is also associated with Florence Nightingale.

Back to the pub for a tasty and sociable roast lunch. The main course is included in the tour fee with bar drinks and hot drinks available for members to buy on the day along with desserts if anyone has room!

By coach then through the attractive Test Valley - lovely winter landscapes of ancient woodlands, water meadows and rolling chalk hills. The waters of the River Test are so clean that it is still used to wash British bank notes and grow watercress.

Our destination is Winchester, the heart of King Alfred's Wessex and one of the most prosperous cities in modern England. More than 100 wooden chalets are nestled against the walls of the ancient cathedral. Look out for the ice rink and the life size nativity.

You can spend all the time shopping or if you prefer join the Guide first for a little trail past Winchester College and the glorious historic buildings that pepper this walled city.

Head home at 4-45pm, just a little later at 5-00pm if you began the day with a midday lunch.
