The Royal Landscape - Autumn

Celebrate the Diamond Jubilee this Autumn by visiting Windsor Castle when there are fewer tourists about and extra rooms are on show

Royal Lanscape - Autumn

Autumn is an ideal time to come; the crowds are gone an there are more rooms open to see.

Windsor Castle is much loved by the Queen both as a private home, where she usually spends the weekend, and as a Royal residence at which she undertakes certain formal duties. It can be very crowded in summer so come from the last week of September 2012 through until the end of January 2013. The castle is quieter and extra rooms, George IV's private apartments known as the semi-state rooms, are also open. They are among the most richly decorated interiors in the castle. Your folk can also enjoy the special Diamond Jubilee exhibition The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years.

Meet at 10-30am at the Savill Building to buy morning refreshments before a scenic coach tour of autumn colours in Windsor Great Park and the Royal Landscape including Virginia Water and Runnymede. Meet some remarkable trees and enjoy stunning views of the castle on route to Windsor for lunch.

After lunch enjoy an entertaining introduction to the largest working castle in the world and take a seat in the beautiful and atmospheric St. George’s Chapel where ten monarchs lie in eternal rest and hear all about our highest order of chivalry - the Order of the Garter. Then visit the State and Semi-State apartments hung with paintings from the Royal Collection including Rembrandt, Rubens, Canaletto and Gainsborough. We can’t deliver a commentary in the apartments but the guide is on hand to answer your questions.

The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years celebrates the Diamond Jubilee by presenting a portrait of The Queen’s reign as captured in fleeting moments on both official occasions and at relaxed family gatherings. There will be time for tea in the town before heading for home a little after 5-00pm.
